Few things are as frustrating as a gate that stops partway through opening or closing. Before assuming the motor needs replacing, it's worth understanding the most common reasons this happens - most are straightforward to diagnose and repair.
Most residential gate motors run on a backup battery that's kept topped up by mains power, so the gate keeps working during load-shedding or a power cut. As these batteries age, they hold less charge, and a gate that worked fine last year may now stall partway through a cycle as the battery can't sustain the motor under load. This is one of the most common causes we see, particularly after extended outages.
Modern gate motors include safety features that stop the gate if they detect unusual resistance - this could be a small stone in the track, an overgrown plant, or a gate that's become slightly misaligned. The motor isn't necessarily faulty; it may simply be doing exactly what it's designed to do.
Inside every gate motor is a gearbox that converts the motor's spinning into the linear or arm movement that actually moves the gate. Over thousands of cycles, these gears wear down, and a worn gearbox often shows up as the gate slowing down, stalling, or making grinding noises before it stops entirely.
Many gate motors include thermal cut-outs that stop the motor if it overheats, particularly during frequent use in hot weather. If your gate has been opened and closed many times in a short period on a hot day, it may simply need a few minutes to cool down before it operates normally again.
Less commonly, the control board itself develops a fault - sometimes from a power surge or lightning strike - or a wiring connection has come loose or corroded. These faults tend to be less predictable, with the gate stopping at different points each time rather than consistently in the same spot.
If your gate is stopping consistently at the same point, this often points to a mechanical or obstruction issue that's worth investigating before it worsens. If it's stopping unpredictably, or has stopped responding altogether, it's best to have a technician test the battery, control board and motor directly rather than guessing.
